It's about the 1944 bomb plot to kill Hitler. It seems pretty interesting, but I'm not too sure about Tom Cruise playing von Stauffenberg.

Tom Cruise messed von Stauffenberg completely. First, he speaks in an American accent. An American accent----- the man is fucking German, Cruise!!! WTF??? Second, the German critics ridiculed Cruise of not taking the character seriously. Von Stauffenberg is one of the very few that they consider a true hero to Germany. He wasn't about greed or glory, but he was compassionate about his job and loyal and knew from the start that Hitler was wrong for Germany. They also said that Cruise played him like his typical "Tom-saves-the-day" persona and he can't just do that with this role. Plus, this is a VERY sensitive subject to Germany, especially the older generation, and they felt Tom wasn't sensitive to that. Overall, I heard the rest of the characters and the film isn't that bad itself.... it's just Tom Cruise ruins it completely. What a douche. ;D

I love to shit on Tom Cruise because he's Tom Cruise.
@ Holly: The accent thing doesn't bother me much. I was reading on Wikipedia that the American actors or whatever were told not to use German accents because it was found to be too fake or whatever. About the "saving the day" thing, I take your word on it. I wouldn't put it past Cruise to do that, it's his typical role in the movies he's been in.
Aaaand for my own personal opinion on the whole conspiracy: Bad idea. Himmler wasn't at the meeting. If they did succeed in killing Hitler, Himmler would undoubtedly snatch power and that man had the Waffen SS under his command. Plus the conspirators had apparently created a list of potential fuhrers, and on it was Erwin Rommel, who disobeyed orders to capture/kill enemies of the state in territories he captured while in North Africa. But holy shit if they did kill Hitler and Himmler, and Rommel became fuhrer... Damn that would be awesome.

Oh, I don't doubt Tom would've butchered a German accent, but it just bothers me that he brings his "Cruise" machoism into most of his movies. Yeah, he's an action hero---- we get that. Don't prove it so much . I can't really take him seriously as an actor these days. And it's not just because he's batshit crazy now (he brought that on himself publicly), but I just feel he isn't being versatile enough as an actor. Maybe he needs to take notes from Johnny Depp. Does anyone know if Valkyrie is also a book?

I agree, if he's not going to take his personal life seriously he can at least act like his career means something to him.
I bet my left foot that you can find over ten books on the subject, but it seems to me this movie is based off the historical events instead of a book about the operation.

I don't know why but it made me smile. Yeah, I know they based it on historical events. You know how sometimes people write so-called fiction out of true facts and yada. Well, the movie did decent in the box office. I think it came in at #3 or #4 with $21+ million. I guess he didn't jack it up too much.

I liked it, but it wasn't spectacular. Tom Cruise gave a good performance, I felt. The movie didn't do a good job of building suspense (but this may be because I already knew the events). It seemed too "clean" as well. The movie coup went pretty much perfectly save for Hitler calling in from the Wolf's Lair and ending it, but based off things I've read, it was poorly planned. The verdict: 7/10. Worth a watch but nothing to rave about. Also, no mention of Rommel.
