I saw the Dead last night. I know there are probobly not alot of fans on this board, but I have always have been a fan of their music, and their style of improvasation. I stopped seeing The Grateful Dead after 5 shows, because it was so sad watching Jerry deteriate as a person and a player. I was also bothered by the people who at the shows who were there just to get messed up. It bothered me that no one seemed to notice that Jerry was so messed up, he couldn't play. I was not suprised when he died. I have not listened to them very much since. But last night reminded me why I loved their music so much. It was a great show. Bob Dylan opened the show, but I missed all but the last song. He did sound great for that one song "Rainy Day Women". The last time I saw the Dead play was in 1992. This was better than any show I have seen them play before. I think it's great that Joan Osbourne is singing with them. She sang "China Doll" perfectly. They played some great songs, and Dylan came back out to play "Big Boss Man" and "Subterranean Homesick Blues". He rocked out, and was more animated than usual. He played keyboards as he sang. The Dead also pulled out the opening song from their first album "Golden Road (to unlimited devotion)", a song they rarely played past the last 60's. There was alot of jazz exploration in between songs, and the drum feature was just amazing. I had such a good time, I never wanted to leave. It's been a long time since I got that feeling from a concert. I was smiling the whole time.
